Dr. André Kuipers, Astronaut and Ambassador of Earth
´Technology, innovation and medical aspects in space travel´
Being a physician André Kuipers was inspired by the idea of helping humanity to be able to continue its ever growing space travel aspirations. The way in which the human body adapts to the conditions in space has always been intriguing for him. In the field of aerospace medicine André Kuipers was involved in a wide variety of research projects. During his space missions he conducted various medical experiments, in which he himself was the test subject most of the time. From his own experience he tells about the effects of acceleration forces and zero-gravity on the human body. Moreover, the medical aspects of being on board the ISS are discussed: the gym, the defibrillator, psychological issues and radiation as well as the system for air, food and water which are put in place to make life in space possible.
